Sustainability at the heart of French wine

Long admired for its heritage and terroir, the French wine industry is now gaining recognition for its bold embrace of innovation. From vineyard to glass, France is reinventing its winemaking to meet the challenges of climate change and evolving consumer expectations. At Tastin’ France events, French producers are not only showcasing their savoir-faire but also their capacity to lead the future of sustainable and high-quality winemaking.

French Wines: A Trusted Partner in the Nordics

In 2023, France was the world’s leading wine exporter by value in Denmark, Norway and Sweden. In Finland, France is ranked second by value.  Worldwide, over €15.6 billion in wine exports in 2024 confirming France’s strong offering.

Year after year, thanks to a combination of centuries-old expertise and cutting-edge innovation, French wines continue to confirm their strong presence and appeal across the Nordic market.

Smart and Sustainable Viticulture

As demand in the Nordics shifts toward sustainable, traceable, and premium wines, France is well-positioned to answer consumers’ wishes.  The number of certified organic winemakers in France increases with new producers joining the movement. In 2024, organic vineyards accounted for 21% of France’s total vineyard area, with a high concentration in three regions that alone accounted for 73% of organic vineyards: Occitanie (34% of the total area), Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur (21%) and Nouvelle Aquitaine (18%).

Sustainable packaging, such as BIBs, lighter bottles, Tetra Pak/PET, and cans, is favoured by Nordic consumers for its modern and convenient carry options.  Among other trends, premium wines, food pairings and low-alcohol options are important. Nordics drink “less but better” with an increasing focus on quality which aligns line with the French offer as it is the quality and authenticity that continue to set French wines apart.

A perfect blend between heritage and innovation

French vineyards are increasingly turning to precision agriculture, using drones, satellite imagery, and AI to monitor vine health, optimise irrigation, and reduce pesticide use. In Bordeaux, Champagne, and the Languedoc, winemakers are experimenting with resilient grape varieties and low-intervention techniques to adapt to climate shifts while preserving the identity of their wines. Biotech innovations are helping develop natural solutions for disease control, while blockchain technology is being used to ensure traceability and fight counterfeiting—an issue of growing concern in export markets.

Amid this wave of innovation, France’s wine regions are becoming living laboratories of change—where cutting-edge technologies meet centuries-old savoir-faire to drive sustainability, competitiveness, and global appeal.
