“Sweden is a natural destination considering its flourishing restaurant business and people who love the sun and wines from the South” says Louis Barruol, President of the Gigondas syndicate who chose Stockholm to hold its Gigondas Experience in 2019. Worthwhile noting New York, Berlin, and Copenhagen had been their previous destinations.

World-class experts and chefs to showcase Gigondas wines in Stockholm

An ambitious program was set up at the Opera Cellar of Stockholm on the 18th of November with a master class and tasting together with 22 of the most prestigious Gigondas producers.

The master class was led by Louis Barruol and Andrew Jefford, wine writer, and columnist for Decanter, which attracted nearly 60 Swedish wine professionals to come and discover the beauty of the Dentelles de Montmirail and the richness of its terroir. Andrew Jefford had selected 7 distinct Gigondas wines that proved both the diversity and complexity of the wines and their suitability for aging.

It made no doubt that all the participants were stunned and convinced by the high quality of the Gigondas wines. Several personalities took part in the event, such as the wine columnist for the financial paper Dagens Industri, Head sommeliers from highly respected establishments such as Bank Hotel and Hillenberg, and importers serving the restaurant business. An important outlet for Gigondas wines that has its given place especially in a country where the bistronomy movement is growing.

The most epic moment of the day was undoubtedly the 4-hands dinner at the Michelin starred restaurant « Ekstedt » together with the Chefs Niklas Ekstedt and Jonas Lagerström. Both Chefs had prepared their signature dishes accompanied by a selection of old vintages often served in Magnum bottles. One is not ready to forget the perfect match between the beef and licorice caviar amuse and the cold smoked reindeer with salsify and quince with Domaine St Duc 2001 and St Cosme 2003. The new generation of sommeliers and Sweden´s most influential gastro journalists teamed up with the Gigondas producers and one can hope for more Gigondas wines on the wine lists in the future and more press following this initiative.

The 60 guests experienced a memorable evening where the warmth from the South and the Swedish hospitality proved to be a great combination.
